Chipset
The Chipset Guide (Thomas Pabst )
Every computer purchase, every motherboard upgrade, every CPU buying decisions comes back to the same thing: the system chipset. If the CPU is the brain of your PC, the chipset is its heart. It controls the flow of bits that travel between the CPU, system memory, and the motherboard bus. Efficient data transfers, fast expansion bus support, and advanced power management features are just a few of the things the system chipset is reponsible for.

CPU
 The CPU (Thomas Pabst)
If you expect top performance from your system, you have to accept that it all starts and ends with the CPU. Whiz-bang graphics cards and oceans of RAM won't fix a system that's dragged down by a pokey processor. Wether you'ew crunching numbers or rendering dimly lit hallways in Quake, the capability of your system to get the job done relies first and foremost on its CPU.

 PowerPC FAQ
PowerPC is a microprocessor designed to meet a standard which was jointly designed by Motorola, IBM, and Apple. The PowerPC standard specifies a common instruction set architecture (ISA), allowing anyone to design and fabricate PowerPC processors, which will run the same code. The PowerPC architecture is based on the IBM POWER architecture, used in IBM's RS/6000 workstations. Currently IBM and Motorola are working on PowerPC chips. The PowerPC architecture specifies both 32-bit and 64-bit data paths. Early implementations will be 32-bit; future higher-performance implementations will be 64-bit. A PowerPC has 32 general purpose (integer) registers (32- or 64-bit) and 32 floating point (IEEE standard 64-bit) registers.

RAM
 The RAM Guide (Thomas Pabst)
A few years ago, there wasn't much to say about sytem RAM. Almost all PCs came with fast page mode (FPM) DRAM, which ran at speeds between 100ns and 80ns. However, escalating CPU and motherboard bus speeds outstripped the ability of FPM DRAM to deliver data in a timely manner. Nowadays there are a lot of different memory designs.
