Beginners, Glossary and Background

Many businesses have several different databases containing information about various aspects of the business. A data warehouse uses an enterprise business model to combine the data and make it available in a consistent way so that enquiries can be made across the entire data set. [

The data warehouse may have data stored at one physical location or distributed across a network.

Facilities for analysis and reporting help with trend analysis and decision support. Short term trends are used for day to day management, whilst long term trends help with forecasting and strategic planning.

Data Mining is a technique for detecting relationships within the data that can be exploited for commercial advantage.

On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) allows rapid access to performance data from different viewpoints, to assist business analysts and managers throughout the enterprise.
